I-275 Closed after semi rear ends a pick-up truck killing one and another airlifted to University of Cincinnati hospital with serious injuries.

One Man is dead and another taken by helicopter to University of Cincinnati Medical Center

On Wednesday, September 8th at approximately 3:40pm, 26 year old, Jonathan Bennett, was traveling South on Interstate 275 in Clermont County near Milford Parkway in his Freightliner tractor-trailer when he failed to maintain a safe stopping distance to the vehicle ahead of him.  Bennett rear ended 42 year old, Elder Thomas Ocampomejia’s Chevrolet Tiltmaster ejecting Ocampomejia from the car.  Ocampomejia, of Cincinnati, was pronounce dead at the scene.  His passenger, 32 year old, Daysi Rodgriquez also of Cincinnati, was airlifted by UC Air Care to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries.  Bennett was transported to Bethesda North hospital with minor injuries.

Ohio State Police (OSP) do not suspect alcohol or drugs as a factor in this incident.

Semi Trucks and Tractor-trailers cause an increased risk of accidents on roadways

The easiest way to prevent you and your family from injuries on the road is to avoid accidents altogether.  That is likely not practical and unfortunately some accidents are simply unavoidable even for the most cautious and defensive drivers.  This is especially true amongst Semi-trucks and tractor trailers. Did you know that Tractor trailer accidents account for at least an eighth of all traffic fatalities?   Due to the size of these trucks they start more slowly, take longer to stop and are less maneuverable.  Your vehicle may often get ‘lost’ in their line of site commonly known as their blind spot.  In addition, most truck drivers are on the roadways for hours at a time.  This can often lead to boredom, day dreaming, losing focus, going into ‘auto pilot’ mode or even falling asleep behind the wheel.  Any sudden shift in the direction or speed of such a large vehicle could result in the driver losing control and inevitably resulting in an accident that more often than not involves at least one or more other vehicles near by.
